AUGUSTA (AP) — A Waterville man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 5- year-old girl last year.
The Kennebec Journal reports 29-year-old Brian Buzzell II was sentenced Wednesday at the Capital Judicial Center in Augusta.
If Buzzell violates the conditions of his release, he could be sent back to prison for 25 years.
Authorities said an officer was called to a Waterville health center in June 2014 to investigate claims by health care workers who determined the vaginal injuries the girl suffered were suspicious.
Buzzell was arrested in connection to the investigation on charges of gross sexual assault.
He initially told police that the child injured herself, but court records show he later confessed to sexually assaulting her.
His attorney says he’s “very sorry for his actions.”
