Movie, author events at library
Freeport Community Library will screen “Singin’ in the Rain,” considered one of the greatest and most successful musicals ever filmed, Thursday, Aug. 20, at 1 p.m. Filled with memorable songs, lavish routines and Gene Kelly’s iconic song-and-dance number performed in the rain, this 1952 classic comedy also stars Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor.
The library will host Maine author James Hayman, creator of the McCabe/Savage thriller series, Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. His book talk will focus on “The Girl in the Glass,” released this month and the fourth book in the McCabe/Savage series. Copies of Hayman’s books will be available for purchase and signing.
College achievements
Andrew L. Collins of Freeport graduated from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, on Aug. 9, earning his master of science degree in earth sciences. While at Ohio State, he had the opportunity to travel twice to Antarctica as part of a research team studying the effects of glacial melting on the movement of the earth’s crust. A 2008 graduate of North Yarmouth Academy, Collins received a bachelor of science degree in geology from the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, in 2012, graduating magna cum laude with departmental honors. He is the son of Malcolm and Susan Collins of Freeport.
Malia Taggart, the daughter of Mark A. Taggart and Laura L. Girr of Freeport, graduated summa cum laude after majoring in interdisciplinary studies at Bates College, Lewiston. She is a 2010 graduate of Freeport High School. She graduated as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s most prestigious liberal arts honor society.
Two Freeport students with at least a 3.5 grade point average were named to the dean’s list at Union College, Schenectady, N.Y. They are Brina Dillon, a member of the class of 2015, majoring in biology; and Emily Jennings, a member of the class of 2018, majoring in mechanical engineering.
New open mic night at Stirling & Mull
Musician Randy Lindsey is hosting a new open mic night on Thursdays from 7-10 at Stirling & Mull, a new gastropub and wine bar, at 175 Lower Main St. in Freeport.
Since August is a trial period for Open Mic Night, musicians and an audience are both needed. People are invited to come share their music and/or enjoy local live music. Musicians and patrons will have a chance to win one of two $25 gift card drawings each mic night. Even poets and such are welcome. Lindsey has played at Fuego Diablo’s Open Mic Night in Pownal. Wardtown Road work done for now
Work on the Wardtown Road/Route 125 project has been completed for this year. Final paving is scheduled for late spring and early summer of next year. The Public Works Department generally tries to leave one winter season between base coating paving and final paving, in order to determine whether any adjustments to the base coat are needed prior to final paving.
Residents spiff up park and trails
Eagle Scout candidate Quinton Libsack has been working at the Leon Gorman Park and Hedgehog Mountain for his Eagle Scout project. He has fixed erosion problems at Gorman Park and has built a bench at the top of Hedgehog Mountain so that the view of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range can be viewed.
Leon Gorman Park has benefited from other volunteer work this summer. Bill Whelan has been cutting weeds from trails and Lynn Woolf has done extensive flower planting. For those who would like to join the Friends of Leon Gorman Park group, there are other volunteer opportunities to enhance the beauty of the park. Veterinary office hosting Business after Hours
The Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce will hold a Business after Hours event Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 5-7 p.m., at Freeport Veterinary Hospital at 4 Post Road, Freeport. Pet food donations will be accepted in support of the Freeport Community Services Pet Food Fund.
Dr. Carolyn Radding and her staff will give a tour of the office’s state-of-the-art laboratory and preventative-care clinic and will talk about the well-pet care, surgeries, dental cleanings, spaying/neutering services and special financing options.

History haywagon tours
Visitors to Wolfe’s Neck Farm are invited to take a trip around historical Wolfe’s Neck starting at 10 a.m. on Aug. 15 and Sept. 12.
Participants will climb aboard the hay wagon and hear stories of the ship captains, fishermen, farmers, teachers and homemakers who have lived on Wolfe’s Neck during the past 250 years. Many of the buildings and landscapes of Wolfe’s Neck Farm have remained largely unchanged for centuries. This “Wagon Ride to the Past” is an opportunity to learn about the history of this oceanfront farm and its surrounding countryside. Tickets are $6 per person (free for ages 12 and under). Tickets available for farm feast
Wolfe’s Neck Farm will hold a “Family Farm Feast,” featuring local food prepared by Gather Farm Fresh Eatery and Frontier Cafe?, on Sunday, Aug. 30, from 5-8 p.m. Live music, dancing and kids activities will also be part of the event.
The farm is partnering with local farms and restaurants for these events, designed to support its efforts to expand the availability of local and sustainably grown food in Maine. The events also support the Teen Ag Program, educating the next generation of farmers and small-farm advocates while filling food pantry shelves. In the past three years, the Teen Ag Program donated some 12,000 pounds of fresh produce to local food banks.
The cost for the dinner is $50 per adult, $20 per child age 4 and up and free for ages 3 and under. Tickets are available at www.wolfesneckfarm.org.
Chamber golf tourney coming
The Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce will hold a Challenge Golf Tournament, a major fundraiser for 2015. This year the tournament will be held in conjunction with the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce. It’s scheduled for the Val Halla Golf Course in Cumberland on Sept. 16. There will be a shotgun start at 8 a.m. and the day will include a lunch and awards ceremony. Non-players are welcome. For more information, call 847-5240.
Exercise program at FCS
An exercise program with the instructor Rebecca Drouin is offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8-8:45 a.m., year-round, in the Bradley Room at the Freeport Community Center. The class focus is on strength, flexibility, endurance and balance and is appropriate for all fitness levels. Drouin’s specialty is teaching fitness exercise for people aged 55-plus.

Concert in the park
Winslow Park hosts Thursday concerts at 6:30 p.m. through Aug. 13. Day-use admission is charged (resident $2, non-resident $3). A playground and picnic area is also nearby for use. Town committees seek members
The town is in need of residents interested in serving on the newly established Active Living Committee, as well as other town committees. The Active Living Committee will consist of seven members and serve as a resource for initiatives outlined in the Active Living Plan. Nomination papers ready
Nomination papers are available for the Nov. 3 municipal election in the Town Clerk’s Office for those interested in seeking several seats up for election. Papers are due back to the Town Clerk’s Office no later than 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
Seats up for election include one town councilor at large and one District 4 councilor, both three years; two three-year seats on the Regional School Unit 5 Board of Directors and one one-year seat; three three-year seats on the Sewer District; and one three year seat on the Water District.

Free lunch
Freeport Community Services is running the Summer Free Lunch for Kids program, which runs now through Aug. 28, Monday through Friday. FCS will be preparing and serving free, healthy lunches for all children. Meals will be distributed at the Freeport Community Center, the Village View Apartments Community Room, at Mast Landing School, and Wildwood Acres on Elm Street. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m.-noon. There are no income or residency requirements. All children under the age of 19 are welcome.
