FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith will be sidelined at least 6-10 weeks after being punched in the jaw by teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali.

Coach Todd Bowles made the announcement before training camp practice Tuesday.

Enemkpali (EN-um-PALee), an outside linebacker in his second season, has been released by the Jets, according to Bowles.

Bowles says Smith and Enemkpali got into an “altercation” in the Jets’ locker room Tuesday morning in which Smith was “suckerpunched.” The coach adds that it had “nothing to do with football” and it was something “very childish,” without going into details.

Smith, entering his third season, required surgery to repair the jaw. Bowles says the Jets could add another quarterback, but it appears Ryan Fitzpatrick will assume the starting job.

Buccaneers

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers shrugged off a scuffle between two players during practice, calling it a typical training camp dustup.

No punches were thrown when offensive tackle Demar Dotson and defensive end George Johnson tussled briefly after getting tangled up on a 9-on-7 running drill on Tuesday.

“George was doing what he does and tempers started to get a little flared up,” Dotson said. “We talked about it afterward. Hopefully, there are no hard feelings.”

Order was restored quickly.

“We’re just out here competing,” rookie quarterback Jameis Winston said. “Obviously, it was quick, and we got back into things and started playing football.”

Bucs coach Lovie Smith also played down the scuffle.

“There’s not much to say about it. It’s training camp,” Smith said. “Not much more than a 9-on-7 as far as I’m concerned.”

Vikings

MANKATO, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been banged up a bit in practice.

Peterson was tangled up with other players Tuesday during an inside running drill at training camp, falling to the ground while appearing to hurt his leg. Peterson limped to the sideline, tested the leg for and eventually left the field with head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman.

The Vikings didn’t provide an update on Peterson’s condition, but running back Jerick McKinnon said the injury wasn’t believed to be serious.

Linebacker Anthony Barr returned to practice after missing the last week because of a lingering knee injury.

Steelers

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers replaced the most accurate kicker in team history with a former Super Bowl champion.

The Steelers signed Garrett Hartley on Tuesday after Shaun Suisham injured his left knee in a preseason loss to Minnesota on Sunday night.

Suisham, entering his 11th season and sixth with the Steelers, connected on a 36-yard field goal during the second quarter in the Hall of Fame game. But he injured his knee while attempting to make a tackle on the opening kickoff of the second half.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Suisham will undergo knee surgery today.

“I’ll update his status after the procedure,” Tomlin said. “I think that’s appropriate.”

Hartley, a career 81.7 percent kicker, spent six seasons with New Orleans, and played in two games last year in Cleveland, making all three tries for the Browns.

Broncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos will re-open their training camp to the public today.

The team practiced on soggy fields Tuesday, a day after a powerful thunderstorm turned the complex into what defensive coordinator Wade Phillips called “Dove Lake.”

The fields drained well and there were no stormrelated issues at the UCHealth Training Center, formerly known as Dove Valley.

The practice was closed to the public, however, because the dirt parking lots were still a muddy mess from the storm that dumped 3 1/2 inches of rain in an hour and blew over some tents.
