Home to 180 people who live in 98 apartments and 46 cottages, Thornton Oaks is an independent living, retirement community situated on 29 acres in close proximity to downtown Brunswick.

The vision for Thornton Oaks Retirement Community originated in the mid- 1980s with the senior management team of Mid Coast Health Services led by Herbert Paris, then president and CEO. The first cottages were sold in 1990 after several years of planning and development. Two years later, the Matthew Terrace apartment building opened.

Thornton Oaks is affiliated with Mid Coast Health Services but is owned by the resident shareholders. Collectively, they are the seventh largest property tax payer in Brunswick.
