TOPSHAM
The Topsham Firefighters Association is holding a public safety day and fundraising event 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Firehouse Subs at the Topsham Fair Mall.
Firehouse Subs will donate 10 percent of its proceeds during the event to the Topsham Firefighters Association, which is a non-profit group that raises funds to provide additional equipment and support for the Topsham Fire Department. Association members at the public safety event will hand out flyers to patrons to present when they pay for their meal to trigger the donation.
The fire department will have a fire truck at the event and personnel providing public safety education and pamphlets, as well as firefighter helmets for the children.
“As a department we support (the association fundraiser) because the association supports us,” said Topsham Fire Chief Brian Stockdale. “Any life saving events are vitally important.”
The department is part of the community so it needs to be sure it is imbedded in and visible in the community as well, the chief said.
There will also be a boot collection for the Topshambased Mid Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross, which will have a disaster truck at the event.
Topsham Fire Department has been the recipient of a grant from the public-safety oriented restaurant chain which opened in the mall in 2013. The grant funded CPR equipment for community CPR classes as well as a fire extinguisher prop the department has used to train with businesses and community groups.
Firehouse Subs is located at 56 Topsham Fair Mall Road.
