SOUTH PORTLAND (AP) — More than 1,000 cyclists will ride up to 100 miles on Sept. 12 as part of one of the most popular bicycling events in northern New England.

The Maine Lighthouse Ride will include 1,200 riders covering 25, 40, 62 or 100 miles each. The event begins and ends at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland, Maine. The event supports the Eastern Trail Alliance and its goal of completing construction of an off-road route.

The event is in its 12th year. Past events have attracted cyclists from more than two dozen states.

The Eastern Trail Alliance supports the building of a 65- mile greenway from Kittery to South Portland.
