BUCKSPORT (AP) — A federal judge will hear oral arguments about whether the merger of two paper mill companies with investments in Maine was in the public interest.
Judge Tanya Chutkan is reviewing the settlement that the federal Department of Justice entered with Verso and NewPage to allow the merger. The review is taking place on Monday in Washington, D.C.
The settlement requires the sale of NewPage mills in Rumford, Maine, and Biron, Wisconsin, to Catalyst Paper to make sure Verso doesn’t control too much of the market for coated paper post-merger.
The Portland Press Herald reports the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union at Verso’s Bucksport mill brought the case. The company closed the mill last year.
