BRUNSWICK

Parkview Medical Center’s walk-in clinic will close in less than two weeks.

On Wednesday afternoon, Mid Coast Hospital released the following statement:

“In order to best meet the needs of the community, and begin the process of realigning health-care services with Parkview Medical Center, Mid Coast Hospital will consolidate all walk-in care at its downtown Brunswick location. On Sept. 8, 2015, the walk-in clinic at Parkview Medical Center will relocate to 22 Station Ave. in Brunswick, where the newly expanded facility will be accessible to anyone in the community in need of non-emergent medical attention.”

Dr. Jay Mullen, medical director of Emergency Services at Mid Coast Hospital, explained the reasons behind the latest move.

“This was a clinically driven decision made by our physician team and nurse leadership to ensure delivery of the highest quality care with emphasis on patient satisfaction and safety,” Mullen said.

Furthermore, he added, “we cannot sustain operations in three separate locations and need to mobilize staff and resources to focus on just two locations: the Walk-In Clinic Downtown at Brunswick Station and the Emergency Department at Mid Coast Hospital.”

The Walk-In Clinic Downtown at Brunswick Station was selected as the site for consolidation due to the central location and increased accessibility for the entire community, as well as pedestrian traffic. It is also the more frequented of the two walk-in care facilities with 13,500 patients expected this year. The move also frees up available space at Parkview Medical Center to accommodate expanded primary care services and new primary care physicians.

People in need of urgent or emergency care in the Bath-Brunswick-Topsham area should call 9-1-1 or visit Mid Coast Hospital’s Emergency Department immediately. Open 24 hours every day, Mid Coast Hospital is located at 123 Medical Center Drive in Brunswick.

For non-emergent medical needs, the Walk-In Clinic Downtown at Brunswick Station is currently open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Beginning Sept. 8, the clinic will expand its hours to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day.

On Aug. 20, a federal bankruptcy judge approved the former Parkview Adventist Medical Center’s Chapter 11 filing, while also approving the sale of Parkview to Mid Coast Health Services.

Parkview intially filed for Chapter 11 in June, while announcing that it would be acquired by Mid Coast, a move unanimously approved of by the boards of both organizations.

Outpatient services such as medical oncology, hematology and infusion services, laboratory and X-ray, ambulatory surgery, speech, physical and occupational therapy will remain at Parkview, which will continue to provide the faith-based practices of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

However, during a press conference last week, Mid Coast President and CEO Lois Skillings noted that it didn’t appear viable to maintain separate walk-in clinics currently run by both organizations.
