NHL: Free agent Mike Richards was charged with possession of a controlled substance on Tuesday and is to appear in provincial court in Manitoba on Sept. 10, said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Police say a 30-year-old man was arrested and released June 17 after a controlled substance was intercepted at the Emerson port of entry.

The Los Angeles Kings terminated Richards’ contract this summer, citing a “material breach.” The NHL Players’ Association has filed a grievance contesting the termination. The union said a hearing date hasn’t been set.

St. Louis Blues forward Patrik Berglund will undergo surgery on his right shoulder Friday and will be evaluated in four months. The 27-year-old was hurt in training for the upcoming season.

The Blues invited forward Scott Gomez, a 15-year veteran, to training camp for a tryout. The 35-year-old had 34 points seven goals and 27 assists, in 58 games with New Jersey last season.

JURISPRUDENCE

PISTORIUS PAROLE: Oscar Pistorius’ parole board review will take place Sept. 18, meaning the Olympic athlete will have to spend at least another three weeks in jail.

The double-amputee runner was denied early release last week after serving 10 months of his five-year manslaughter sentence for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013. The justice department said then that the decision to release Pistorius to house arrest was made too early.
