WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Monument was scheduled to open at 9 a.m. today. Elevator technicians have completed their work and cleared the elevator for service. Ticket distribution for today’s visits will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Washington Monument Lodge (15th Street between Madison and Jefferson drives).
The Washington Monument had been closed again after its second elevator outage in two days.
The National Park Service says 23 people were escorted down the stairs from the observation level after the elevator stopped working on Wednesday afternoon. No one was on board the elevator at the time.
The elevator also malfunctioned on Tuesday night, leaving 63 people on the 500-foot observation deck.
