Lisbon
Coach — Julie Petrie. Last season — After winning the MVC Championship against Oak Hill, Lisbon went on a postseason roll. The Greyhounds knocked off Dirigo (1-0), Yarmouth (2-0) and Oak Hill (2-1, two overtimes) to advance to the State Class C title game, where the ’Hounds lost to Winslow, 3-1. Region this season — Class C South. Players lost — Allie Bubar, Michaela Bedell, Molly Nicholson, Arianna Kahler, Victoria Swan, Stevie Charest, Courtney Lawrence, Mia Durgin, Ashley Field. Returning — Seniors Charlotte Mooney (forward/ midfield), Riley Galipeau (MF), Olivia Leduc (defense); juniors Kate Philbrick (F), Chase Collier (F), Bree Daigle (MF), Alyssa Hall (D/MF); sophomores Emily Brewer (D), Morgan Fenderson (MF/F). Key newcomers — Sophomores Savannah Szechalski (F), Shelby Cyr (D); freshmen Lindsey Huston (D/MF), Mallory Fairbanks (D/MF), Sydney Plourde (F). From the coach — “They know they have a lot of work to do, but they are motivated to continue the rich tradition of Lisbon field hockey. It hurts to lose 20 girls to graduation over two years, but as long as they can hold it together, we will be fine. We will take everyone seriously in our wide-open league. “Kate Philbrick and Chase Collier should be standouts at forward for us, and Bree Daigle is a solid player. We have some veterans, but have spots to fill in the midfield, on defense and in goal.” Team overview — All things considered, the loss of so many quality field hockey players over a small period of time should add up to a rebuilding year. But, last season was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Greyhounds as well and look what happened! Petrie hopes to return toward the end of the regular season, and Campbell will certainly keep the Lisbon train moving forward. Season opener — Wednesday at St. Dom’s, 4 p.m. Key contests — Sept. 11 home against Oak Hill; Sept. 21 home vs. Winthrop; Oct. 2 at Hall-Dale.
Brunswick
Coach — Karin Paquin. Last season — Finished 1-13 and missed the postseason. Region this season — Class A North. Players lost — Alexis Schniederate. Returning — Seniors Madison Krolak (D), Eli Lienert (MF), Jordan Van Savage (GK); juniors Faith Allen-Harris (D), Elena Dugal (MF), Hanna Escoe (F/MF), Katty Stimson (F/MF), Anna Webster (D/F), Lauren Grotholl (F), Erin Marc-Aurele (D); sophomores Hollie Imperato (F), Anna Rider (MF). Key newcomers — Freshmen Erin Coughlin (MF), Maggie Folsom (D), Eliza Rudalevidge (MF), Shea Sullivan (F/MF). From the coach — “We have great chemistry on both sides of the field, with the freshmen having played together for a long time in middle school. We are looking for fluid movement and to get that push up the field. “We have worked hard on offense. The freshmen were successful in our scrimmage game at Yarmouth in getting the ball to the net, and our seniors and juniors have done the same from the other side of the field. “Skowhegan and Messalonskee are strong, but I believe it is open from there. We are headed in the right direction, with the youth programs starting to benefit the varsity high school team in the coming years.” Team overview — As Paquin, who recently gave birth to a son, said, the feeder programs from the middle school and the summer/fall clinics have started to show benefits, with this year’s freshman class expected to be a solid group. The coming years look bright. Brunswick should see more than one win this season, as long as the Dragons are able to put the ball in the cage. Season opener — Sept. 2 at home against Mt. Blue, 4 p.m. Key contests —Sept. 4 home against Mt. Ararat; Sept. 12 home vs. Lewiston; Oct. 13 at Mt. Ararat.
Mt. Ararat
Coach — Krista Chase. Last season — Came on strong toward the end of the season, finishing 3-11 and outside the playoff picture in Chase’s first year. Region this season — Class A North. Players lost — Alyssa Curit, Nicole Labbay, Jessy Doyle, Maggie Vaillancourt. Returning — Seniors Eva Jerome (F), Kendall Hamilton (D), Maddie Alexander (MF, KVAC Second Team last season), Meaghan Caouette (F), Sharely Moreland (injured last year, D), Magan Thomas-Copland (D); juniors Haley Frizzle (GK), Laura Secone (D), Alana Weaver (D), Porter Galvin (F), Samantha Gonyea (F), Karli Brillant (GK). Key newcomers — Junior Thalia Couture; sophomores Katie Trebilcock, Madison Stover, Fiona Hoang, Abby Malbon. From the coach — “We are a developing team. Our motto for the season is ‘Integrity, Service,
Teamwork and Excellence.’ We have a lot of work to do to continue our pursuit of growth, but we are on our way. I have a smaller group of players this year (29), but they are one of the hardest working, ‘no-excuses’ group of athletes I have ever coached. “Our expectations for the season are simple — work with persistence and heart, encourage each other through camaraderie, push ourselves every day in skills and drills through fast-paced, rigorous practices, and to have fun and enjoy this game we all love so much. We are not looking at any team in particular to beat. We just don’t want to beat ourselves. Our
goal is to be able to prove ourselves as strong competitors on the field.” Team overview — In Chase’s first season, it took some time for the Eagles to put it together. But, the second half showed an improving team, something Chase hopes her team can carry over into this season. Season opener — Sept. 2 home against Lewiston, 4 p.m. Key contests — Sept. 4 at Brunswick; Sept. 15 home vs. Hampden Academy; Oct. 13 home against Brunswick.
Morse
Coach — Kerri Reno, first season. Last season — Finished 1-13 and missed the postseason. Region this season — Class B North. Players lost — Bryanna Ringrose, Allison Plummer, Kaylee Walker, Bronwyn Morissette, Mallory Goodine, Shira Gersh, Julia Hart, Shaw Pinkham. Returning — Seniors Asia DeRosby (MF), Marisabelle Rodriguez (D); junior KK Fifield (D). Key newcomers — Senior Madaleine Baker (GK); freshmen Katie Moore (F), Emma Warner (MF), Vanessa St. Pierre (F). From the coach — “Our team has come out strong so far in our preseason. We have had more success scoring than we have in the past and we are healthy, which is a great way to start the season. We are already getting the ball into scoring position more this year than we have in the past. We will now just need to capitalize on those scoring opportunities. “We had a strong defense last season. It’s hard
not to when you get hit with so much pressure at your goal, and I expect they will be just as strong this year. I also expect the ball to be in our opponent’s circle a lot more this season. We have speed in our midfielders and they are ready to run. “Our keys to success are going to be capitalizing on penalty corners, breaking down our opponent’s defense and staying healthy.” Team overview — If the Shipbuilders can find a way to get the ball out of their own end of the field and find a bit of scoring touch, this is a team that can pick up more wins and make teams take notice. Season opener — Sept. 3 at Lincoln Academy, 7 p.m. Key contests — Sept. 10 home opener vs. Gardiner; Sept. 29 at Oceanside; Oct. 5 at home vs. Mt. View.
Freeport
Coach — Marcia Wood. Last season — Started the season strong in darting out to a 7-3 mark. But, lost scoring touch the rest of the way, including a 4-0 Western B quarterfinal loss to Leavitt. Region this season — Class B South. Players lost — Abby Smith, Hannah Williams, Dani Foster, Taylor Schenker, Chloe Whittaker. Returning — Seniors Morgan Karnes (GK), Lexi Peacock (MF), Bailey Karnes (MF), Kendra Harrison (M); junior Bailey Coffin (F, scored team-leading eight goals last year); sophomore Chloe Davidson (F, had two goals last year). Key newcomers — Sophomore Izzy Maison (D); freshman Alexa Konig (F). From the coach — “We’ve been really working on our passing game this preseason and utilizing everyone. We want to play a more controlled game. The four seniors have been working hard to get the underclassmen comfortable playing at the varsity level. We’re moving the ball around the field well and communicating. “Bailey Coffin is our only returning starter on the forward line, so that will be our focus the second week of preseason, getting the ball in the back of the cage. “I just want to keep improving so that we are peaking at the end of the season. We had ups and downs last year and I think that motivated the returning players. We had a big turnout at our summer league, so the girls came in relatively prepared. I think once we start feeling that success we’ll feed off it.” Team overview — The Western Maine Conference is always tough, and Wood expects Kennebunk, Falmouth and York to rise to the top. Defensively, the Falcons were strong last year, but lost the scoring touch in the second half. If Freeport can find ways to put the ball into the net, this may be a solid season. Season opener — Sept. 4 at home against Cape Elizabeth, 4 p.m. Key contests — Sept. 8 at Gray-New Gloucester, Sept. 10 at home vs. Kennebunk; Oct. 8 at home vs. Old Orchard Beach.
