This September’s First Thursday program at the Orr’s Island Library features Maine’s Poet Laureate Wesley McNair. He will give a reading of his poetry, followed by a question and answer session and book signing, at 7 p. m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at the library.
At the reading, McNair will tell the story of how he developed as a poet, from past to present, using poems to illustrate.
“ People might be surprised that I didn’t have a literary background at all,” McNair said. “I started out in poverty and a broken home, and there were many detours along my way to becoming a poet.”
McNair’s poetry, based on the humor and sorrow of ordinary life, is likely to connect with people of all ages, even those who think they don’t like poetry.
“Anybody in my audience who has lived a life has already done the required homework,” he said.
The Orr’s Island Library is located at 1699 Harpswell Islands Road, in Orr’s Island.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
