BATH — George Owen VanHazinga died at home in Bath, suddenly but peacefully, on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015.

He was born on May 4, 1955, in Fitchburg, MA, the son of Andrew VanHazinga and Amy (Wartiainen) Van- Hazinga. He was a graduate of Philips Academy, Andover, and spent a year of study abroad at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham, England. He graduated from Swarthmore College and earned a master’s degree in city and regional planning from Harvard University. At the time of his death, he was working from home as an appraiser with Health Care Valuation Advisers in Princeton, MA.

George grew up on a dairy farm as the youngest of four children. He learned the value of hard work and patience, and was attuned to the natural rhythms of life, birth, and death. He was gently practical in his attitudes and outlook, and was blessed with a good sense of humor.

George was a deeply loving husband and father to whom family was very important. He was also a committed Christian, a member of the Episcopal Church all his adult life. He served as Senior Warden at St. James’s Church, Porter Square, Cambridge, MA, and did volunteer work in the archives of the Diocese of Maine.

He is survived by his spouse, the Rev. Edward R. Greene, of Bath; his son Andrew VanHazinga and daughter-in-law Elizabeth of Fitchburg, MA; his daughter Cornelia VanHazinga of Waltham, MA; his daughter Mary Grace VanHazinga of Leominster, MA; four grandchildren: Adeline, William, David and Wilhelmina; his sister and brother Virginia VanHazinga and Kenneth VanHazinga of Shoreham, VT; his former wife and close friend Emily Randall of Fitchburg, MA; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by a brother, Russell VanHazinga, of Westminster, MA.

His funeral service will be a celebration of the Eucharist at Grace Episcopal Church, 1100 Washington St., Bath, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, 2015. At his request, there will be no calling hours or viewing. A gathering of family and friends will follow at Tubb’s Hall.
