MATTAWAMKEAG (AP) — Maine wardens have identified the youngster who died in the Mattawamkeag River in Penobscot County.
Wardens say 9-year-old Karisa Babcock of Lee likely drowned while attempting to swim across the river with two other children and four adults Friday evening.
Wardens say the girl became separated while trying to cross a section of the river known for strong currents.
Her body was recovered Saturday morning.
The girl had been camping with her family at the town-owned Mattawamkeag Wilderness Campground and Park.
