TOPSHAM (AP) — Police say a Maine man was arrested after he crashed his SUV into a guardrail and inhaled computer keyboard cleaner in front of an officer.
Sgt. Robert Ramsay tells the Portland Press Herald that 44-year-old John Yates was arrested Monday night on Interstate 295 in Topsham.
Police spotted Yates’ SUV heading south on the interstate just after 8 p.m. Ramsay says Yates pulled into a breakdown lane then pulled out suddenly, almost hitting a tractor-trailer, when a police cruiser approached.
Police say Yates hit a guardrail and went into a ditch. After an officer ordered him out of the car, police say Yates grabbed a canister of keyboard cleaner and began inhaling it.
Yates faces several charges including driving while under the influence of drugs. He is being held on $1,000 bail.
