BIDDEFORD — Thursday was the last day Biddeford voters who wish to seek public office in the Nov. 3 general election could file nomination papers, and City Clerk Carmen Morris released the final list of candidates Thursday afternoon.

In the mayoral race, Daniel Parenteau, a business consultant and associate member of the Planning Board, will attempt to unseat incumbent Alan Casavant, who is seeking his third two-year term as the city’s mayor. Both are lifelong Biddeford residents.

Casavant said in an email Thursday night that he is proud of what his administration has accomplished in the last four years and hopes to be elected again “in order to continue all of the positive changes that have occurred in the past few years.”

Parenteau, who ran unsuccessfully for City Council in 2013, told the Journal Tribune in a July interview that he is running because he’s “concerned about the trajectory of the city” and hopes to make changes that will make the city’s government more “citizen centered.”

There are 22 candidates, including seven incumbents, running for all nine seats on the City Council.

Running for the council’s two at-large seats are incumbent Marc Lessard, former Mayor Joanne Twomey, former City Councilor Melissa Bednarowski, Doris McAuliffe and Laura Seaver, who is on the city’s Policy Committee. Current City Councilor At-Large Clement Fleurent did not file nomination papers to run again.

Kathleen Russell is challenging incumbent Michael Swanton for the Ward 1 council seat.

Current Ward 2 Councilor John McCurry is the only candidate running unopposed.

Former City Councilor Richard Rhames is challenging incumbent Stephen St. Cyr for the Ward 3 council seat. St. Cyr was appointed to the position in March after Bradley Cote resigned in February.

Terry Belanger is challenging incumbent Robert Quattrone for the Ward 4 council seat.

The race for the Ward 5 council seat has drawn the most interest. Running for the position are incumbent Bob Mills, former City Councilor Perry Aberle, Nathan Bean, Carol Boisjoly, Karl Reed Jr. and Milton Truman.

In a Facebook post Wednesday night, Mills thanked his fellow candidates and wrote, “Looking forward to hearing your views and ideas.”

Running for the Ward 6 council seat are Debra Lauzon and former City Councilor Rick Laverriere, who is on the Airport and Fire commissions. Current Ward 6 Councilor Roger Hurtubise did not file nomination papers to run again.

Ben Neveux, who is on the Solid Waste Management Commission and Capital Projects/Operations Committee, is challenging incumbent Michael Ready for the Ward 7 council seat.

Nine candidates are running for the School Committee’s seven seats. Crystal Blais, Briana Gilbert, Timothy Pierce and Karen Ruel are facing incumbents Dennis Angela, Tony Michaud, Heather Mills, Bil Moriarty and Lisa Vadnais.
