ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Coach Jay Gruden said Sunday he will decide whether Robert Griffin III or Colt McCoy backs up quarterback Kirk Cousins for Week 1 after Griffin visits a neurologist “early this week.”

Washington opens the regular season at home against Miami on Sunday.

Griffin missed the final two preseason games after sustaining a concussion against Detroit on Aug. 20.

He was cleared to return two days before the next game against Baltimore before a team neurologist reversed his decision.

“Hopefully he’ll get cleared,” Gruden said. “But we’ll wait and see.”

Gruden demoted Griffin and chose Cousins to be the starter last Monday, setting off speculation that Griffin might be cut or even traded.

BRONCOS: Denver waived running back Montee Ball and center Gino Gradkowski to make room for two players claimed off waivers.

The Broncos bolstered their offensive line by claiming center James Ferentz, who was cut by the Houston Texans. And they propped up a thin tight end group by adding Mitchell Henry from the Green Bay Packers.

Ball’s ouster wasn’t a surprise.

The second-round pick in 2013 never lived up to expectations in Denver after scoring an NCAA-record 83 touchdown at Wisconsin.

JETS: New York claimed safety Ronald Martin off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks and re-signed wide receiver-kick returner Chris Owusu a day after releasing him.

To make room for Martin and Owusu, the Jets released safety Rontez Miles and placed cornerback Dee Milliner, the team’s first-round pick in 2013, on short-term injured reserve.

The move with Milliner was expected after he injured his right wrist during training camp and required surgery. By being placed on short-term IR, Milliner can return to the active roster after eight weeks.

EAGLES: Philadelphia added a third quarterback when it was awarded Stephen Morris off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

GIANTS: New York added two players to its defense, claiming cornerback Asa Jackson and defensive lineman Louis Nix off waivers.

To make room on their roster, the Giants cut defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis and cornerback Mike Harris.

TRADES: Cleveland traded running back Terrance West to the Tennessee Titans for a seventh-round pick in the 2016 draft.

West was a third-round pick in 2014 out of Towson University. He rushed for 673 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie, but never fulfilled the Browns’ expectations. On Friday, Coach Mike Pettine referred to West’s “ups and downs,” saying he “flashes at times brilliance and then other times where he gets a minus on the grade sheet.”

Dallas acquired running back Christine Michael in a trade from Seattle, giving up a conditional 2016 draft pick.

Defensive end Lavar Edwards was waived to make room on the 53-man roster.

Michael was a second-round pick out of Texas A&M in the 2013 draft. He ran for 254 yards over 14 games the past two seasons with the Seahawks.
