The cover photo on Abbondante restaurant’s Facebook page was updated on Tuesday afternoon to a black box with a message in Italian: “Grazie mille per tutto! Abbondante e chiuso.” Translated to English: “Thanks a million for everything! Abbondante is closed.”

David Ross and Merrilee Paul, who opened the Kennebunk restaurant in May 2013 in partnership with the Kennebunkport Resort Collection, served their final customers Saturday night. They closed what was their third restaurant to “focus on the expanding growth of our core businesses, 50 Local, Owen’s Farmhouse, & our newest venture into the catering world,” they wrote on Facebook.

Abbondante was the Resort Collection’s only restaurant not connected to a hotel or resort. The building at 27 Western Ave. in Kennebunk’s Lower Village is owned by KRC and will continue to be used by the group’s culinary arm for cooking classes, special events and pop-up dinners, said Kristin Fuhrmann Simmons, the group’s marketing manager.

“The KRC partners came to a mutual decision to close the business after three years of operation … and are greatly thrilled with the work that Dave and Merrilee have done,” Simmons said. The Kennebunkport Resort Collection will support Abbondante employees through the transition and offer them positions at other properties as needed, she said.
