SACO — Two men were arrested Saturday for allegedly robbing a Lewiston bank after a high-speed chase that led into Saco.

Neil West, 64, and Joseph Richards, 46, were charged with armed robbery in connection with a hold-up Saturday morning at the TD Bank on Lisbon Street in Lewiston, according to The Associated Press.

Saco Deputy Police Chief Raynald Demers said West is from Portland. He did not have an address for Richards.

Police on the Maine Turnpike spotted the pair in a minivan after the alleged Lewiston robbery, according to The Associated Press. The driver tried to evade police in a high-speed chase that ended on the front lawn of a home on a dead-end street in Saco, startling the homeowner and her neighbors, according to The Associated Press.

“It was a surprise to see a van come careening up my front yard, and a man with a gun get out,” homeowner Bethany Savage told WCSHTV. “It’s not every Saturday morning.”

Neighbor Tim Milton told the television station that he was watching a TV news report about the robbery when he heard “crashing and smashing” noises outside his home. He said police cruisers immediately arrived in force.

“There must have been 20 cars out here,” Milton said.

Demers said Richards and West were found in the woods just before noon after more than an hour search. Old Orchard Beach police and the Old Orchard Beach police department’s K-9 assisted in the search, according to Demers.

Maine police say they’ve turned the investigation over to the FBI, according to The Associated Press.
