NEW GLOUCESTER — Senior captain Allen Sumrall had the second fastest time of the day as the No. 8-ranked team in New England, the Bates men’s cross country team, opened with a 62-48 loss to No. 6 Colby in modified scoring Saturday in the rivals’ annual Class Wave Races.
The annual meet pits both teams juniors and seniors against one another in one race, and first-years and sophomores in the other, with the top seven finishers scoring points, with higher scores winning. Colby outscored Bates, 29-26 in the junior/senior race and 33-22 in the freshman/sophomore race.
Taylor Saucier of Freeport and Bates College finished fifth overall in the senior/junior race. He finished the course in 19:33.
