A 24-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle crash late Tuesday night in Windham, according to police.

Windham police say Kevin Coppersmith of Gorham was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at the intersection of Ward and Center roads. Coppersmith is the 28th motorcycle fatality this year in Maine.

Officers spotted a speeding motorcycle on Windham Center Road around 11:40 p.m. and before they could catch up to the speeding bike it crashed at the Ward Road intersection, according to police.

Police said speed was a contributing factor in the crash, which is under investigation. It is unknown at this time if alcohol was a factor, according to police. Coppersmith was not wearing a helmet, police said.

This has been the deadliest year on record for fatal motorcycle accidents since 1991, when 34 people died in motorcycle crashes, according to the Department of Public Safety. The number of motorcycle fatalities usually ranges between 12 and 14 annually.
