AUGUSTA — Brunswick running back Will Bessey broke loose for 235 yards as the Dragons rolled to a convincing 58-27 Class B North high school football win over Cony on Friday night.
Bessey carried the ball 27 times and scored two touchdowns, while Ben Palizay picked up 98 yards and hit paydirt three times as the Dragons improved to 3-0 and hosts Messalonskee (2-1) this upcoming Friday at 7 p.m.
Two early interceptions powered Brunswick early. Aaron Carlton intercepted Cony (1-2) quarterback Taylor Heath (234 passing yards, three touchdowns) on the Rams’ first possession. Bessey scored on an 8-yard run, with Alex Larson tacking on the point-after kick for a 7-0 lead.
A few plays later, Larson dove to intercept Heath, and Palizay capped the next Brunswick drive with a 4- yard run for a 14-0 lead.
“The defense started great once again, and these were turnovers that we forced. We tipped the pass and a kid intercepted it,” said Brunswick coach Dan Cooper.
Brunswick quarterback Thomas Hanson (7-for-10, 136 yards, TD) made it a 21-0 Dragons advantage on a 3- yard run before Cony found the end zone on a Heath to Jordan Roddy 19-yard hookup to get the Rams to 21-7.
But, Brunswick answered quickly, with Bessey finding a seam and going 40 yards for a score, and on the Dragons’ next drive, tight end Corbin Teel (four receptions, 82 yards, TD) hauled in a tipped Hanson pass and broke loose for a 43-yard score and a 36-7 advantage. The Dragons led 36-14 at the half.
In the second half, Larson nailed a 32-yard field goal, and Palizay scored on TD runs of 16 and 27 yards to complete the Brunswick scoring.
Roddy had 96 yards receiving and two TD receptions for Cony.
Brunswick finished with a 512-352 yardage advantage.
“Our offensive line of Austin Phillips, Logan Ouellette, Josh Goddard, Sullivan Boyd and Elijah Gordon played fantastic,” said Cooper.
