Thornton Academy was dealt its first defeat of the season Saturday, but luckily didn’t have to wait long to rebound. The Golden Trojans played a day/night doubleheader up the coast, and after losing 3-1 in the opener against Mount Desert Island in Bar Harbor, they came back and swept the nightcap 3-0 over host Ellsworth.
Thornton (6-1) dropped the first two sets of the opener – 25-12, 25-23 – before prolonging the match with a 25-22 win in the third set. But MDI (3-3), which also goes by the nickname “Trojans,” closed out TA’s first loss with a 25-19 fourth set.
Kylee Austin and Ashley Howe showed well in the loss, leading the team in kills (nine and eight, respectively) and digs (12 and 10). Dianne Dervis won eight-consecutive service points in the third set.
The Golden Trojans faired better against the Eagles (2-3), sweeping the three sets 25-18, 25-20, 25-17.
Julia Chasse recorded 18 assists and served four aces, while Megan Blanchette had a team-high nine digs.
Field Hockey
MASSABESIC 3, DEERING 0
PORTLAND — Visting Massabesic stayed persistent against Deering, continually pounding shots on goal before one finally went in before halftime. The Mustangs doubled that output in the second half to finish off a 3-0 victory over Deering in an SMAA field hockey game Saturday.
Emma Rutledge completed the icebreaker on Massabesic’s (5-2) 10th quality shot of the game, as she converted a pass from Josie Ring with 1:40 left in the first half.
Rutledge scored again midway through the second half and Abbie Staples finished off the scoring with an assist from Libby Beals with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Kelley Wescott made three saves in net for the Mustangs and Lydia Wasina added a defensive save when the game was scoreless in the first half. Lillian Trager stopped 19 off 22 shots in net for the Rams (2-5).
GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 8, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 0
GRAY — Jenny Holmquist netted a hat trick and Alie Martell scored twice as host Gray-New Gloucester downed Old Orchard Beach 8-0 in a WMC field hockey game Saturday.
The Patriots also got goals from Cara Waltz, Chloe Hendrich and Emilie Sanborn.
Jenny Cobb made 17 saves in goal for the Seagulls.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Maegan Halle converted a penalty kick midway though the first half and the Old Orchard Beach defense kept a clean sheet as the Seagulls topped North Yarmouth Academy 1-0 in a WMC girls soccer game Saturday.
The Seagulls (1-6) were awarded the penalty after the Panthers (0-6) were called for a handball in the box off a corner kick by OOB’s Emily Greelee.
Tiffany LeClair made three saves to earn the shutout for the Seagulls, while Lindsay Tufts stopped five shots for NYA.
