A Wayne man has been ordered to serve two years probation and pay an $8,000 fine for collecting veterans benefits to which he was not entitled.

Lawrence A. Stewart, 48, was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Bangor for theft of public money. From October 2011 to January 2015, Stewart received veterans’ disability compensation based on unemployability when he was actually gainfully employed, U.S. District Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II said.

Stewart repeatedly submitted false information underreporting the amount he worked and earned. Before sentencing, Stewart repaid $53,852 in restitution to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
