• Black Point Inn: Outstanding Legacy Business

• Pine Tree Seafood & Produce Co.: Outstanding Small Business

• Casco Bay Butter Co: Outstanding New Business

“It’s a pleasure to once again recognize outstanding businesses in Scarborough,” said Kevin Freeman, SEDCO board chairman. “The Scarborough business community is so vibrant, that it is a real challenge to narrow the field down to just four businesses. This year we’re honoring businesses in finance, hospitality, manufacturing and retail. Each one of the businesses and their employees have made a difference in Scarborough this year.”

“The SEDCO annual meeting celebrates the energy and creativity of businesses in Scarborough,” said Karen Martin, SEDCO’s executive director. “It’s our way of thanking our businesses for choosing Scarborough and contributing to the community.”

The annual meeting program also features Danielle Ripich, president of the University of New England. Martin explained that nearly 20 percent of Scarborough’s economic base is in the health care sector, making UNE’s focus on health care professions of critical interest.

gravestone maker’s work

The monthly meeting of the Scarborough Historical Society will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the new time of 7 p.m. Ron Romano will provide a program about the work of Bartlett Adams (1776-1828), who established the first stone-cutting shop in Portland in 1800. He produced hearthstones, mantelpieces and grave stones. The presentation will include a presentation about Bartlett’s work, but the focus of the program will be the gravestones Bartlett made, that are still located in Scarborough’s oldest cemeteries.

A brief business meeting will first be held, followed by Romano’s one-hour presentation. The meeting is held at the society’s museum and meeting room located at 647 U.S. Route 1, adjacent to the Dunstan Fire Station. All monthly meetings are free to members of the public. However, donations are always welcomed.

Health clinic offers free

flu shots

ClearChoiceMD in Scarborough will offer free flu shots to the community from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3 and 4.

The urgent care center is located at 273 Payne Road. Shots are available for anyone age 6 months and up and no appointment is necessary, although a photo ID is required.

“Flu season is unpredictable and is already beginning with three confirmed cases in New Hampshire already. This makes early fall the best time to get your flu shot,” said Dr. Thomas H. Scott, director of clinical operations at ClearChoiceMD.

Practicing good health habits, combined with a flu vaccination, are the best way to avoid contracting or spreading the flu, ClearChoiceMD said in a press release. Such habits include washing your hands frequently, disinfecting surfaces, covering your mouth and nose, getting enough sleep, a healthy diet, drinking lots of water and staying home when sick.
