The left photograph appeared in the May 12, 1961, edition of the Portland Evening Express as part of a two-page spread on the proposed Munjoy South urban renewal district. The buildings pictured were slated for demolition in the city’s original urban renewal plan. Ultimately, most of the buildings were spared (as seen in the September 2015 photo), but several nearby blocks were bulldozed to make way for the Munjoy South and Washington Square apartment complexes.

The Portland Room of the Portland Public Library is in the process of organizing and conserving the archival collection of original Portland Press Herald, Maine Sunday Telegram and Evening Express photographic negatives — a major collection that spans from 1937 to 2005.
