Moonlight Masquerade Oct. 24

Freeport Players is celebrating Halloween with its first Moonlight Masquerade, a dance and costume party, on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 7:30-10:30 p.m., at the Freeport Community Center, 53 Depot St. The Delta Knights will be playing classic rock, swing and rhythm and blues music. Participants are encouraged, though not required, to dress up in their favorite costume. Prizes will be awarded. Costumes from the Players’ collection will be available in case anyone needs a little help getting in the Halloween mood. There will be a cash bar and complimentary savory and sweet refreshments.

The event is for ages 21-plus, and space is limited. Tickets are $30, which include food and a tax-deductible donation to the Players. Freeport Players was founded in 1989 to provide opportunities for members of the community to be involved in all aspects of theater. The organization produces a wide range of theater experiences, from classical to contemporary, comedies and dramas, plays and musicals.

Dairy, livestock seminar offered

University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Wolfe’s Neck Farm are partnering with the Wisconsin School for Beginning Dairy and Livestock Farmers to offer a seminar focused on business planning. Rick Kersbergen, extension professor, will facilitate the class, geared for beginning pasture-based dairy and livestock farmers. The weekly course will be offered remotely at Wolfe’s Neck Farm, 184 Burnett Road, Freeport, noon-2:15 p.m. from Nov. 12 until March 2016. The Wisconsin School for Beginning Dairy and Livestock Farmers (www.cias.wisc.edu/dairysch.html) is the host organization. Course fee is $300. For kids

The new Lego Club at the Freeport Community Library has started for children ages 5-12. The club will meet from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month in the story room.

On Thursday, Oct. 15, at 10:15 a.m., musician Matt Loosigian will present “Earth Jams,” a concert for toddlers through first grade.

Tuscan Bistro benefit Oct. 20

Tuscan Bistro is supporting the Freeport High School cross country and track teams on Tuesday, Oct. 20, when 10 percent of the sales will be donated to the Freeport Running Boosters. The boosters are encouraging Freeport residents to eat out or order dinner out on Oct. 20 to support the teams.

Masons serving roast pork

The Freeport Masons will host a roast pork supper on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 5-6:30 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge on Mallett Drive in Freeport. The menu will feature pork loin, mashed potatoes, assorted vegetables, home-made biscuits, dessert and beverage. The cost is $9, and half price for children under 12.

Historian Amy Smith to speak at library

Historian Amy Smith will present a talk, “Portland’s Black Abolitionists: The Story of the Abyssinian Meeting House,” Wednesday, Oct. 21, 6:30 p.m., at the Freeport Community Library. In 1828, a group of free African-American men – wealthy, self-employed property owners – formed Portland Abyssinian Church. Its landmark meeting house is today under restoration at the foot of Munjoy Hill. Smith will tell the story of the third-oldest independent African-American meeting house in the nation and who its founders and congregants were.

Free movie day for Freeporters

Nordica Theater, 1 Freeport Village Station, will host a free movie day for residents of Freeport, on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Proof of residency is required. Donations for the Freeport Rotary will be collected.

Absentee ballots now available

The deadline for Freeport voters to request an absentee ballet at the Freeport Town Clerk’s Office is Thursday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m. They can be requested in person Monday through Thursday, from 7:30 a.m-6 p.m.; electronically at http://maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/AbsenteeBallot/index.pl; by mail by calling the town clerk at 865-4743, ext. 123; through a third person, also by calling or visiting the town clerk.

Also, those who have moved since the last time they voted should stop by the town clerk’s office with proof of residency by Oct. 29 so their names will appear on the correct district voting list. For additional information, call 865-4743, ext. 123.

PSO conductor Huynh

to speak at club

Norman Huynh, the assistant conductor of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, will be the guest speaker at the Freeport Woman’s Club, Friday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m., at the Freeport Community Library. Huynh is an award-winning conductor, having worked with symphony orchestras in Virginia, Baltimore, Toledo and Macon. He will share his passion for educating the next generation of musicians and music lovers.

The Freeport Woman’s Club is a service organization that has been in existence for 90 years. It meets once a month at the Freeport Community Library. The club’s fundraising projects include a Spring Bazaar and a bake sale on Election Day. Monies raised provide local scholarships, community improvements, donations to Freeport Community Services and support for women seeking career education. Freeport Players will hold auditions for “The WFCP Home Time Radio Hour, 1950s Holiday Edition,” on Monday, Oct. 19, and Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Freeport Middle School, 19 Kendall Lane. Roles are available for singers and actors aged 14 and older.

Actors will be asked to read excerpts of radio sketches. Celebrity impressions, vocal sound effects, accents and character voices are especially encouraged. Singers are asked to prepare a 90-second excerpt of a popular tune from the 1950s. No audition appointment is necessary.

After a brief hiatus, Freeport Players’ fictional radio station WFCP is returning to Freeport Performing Arts Center in December with an all-new collection of live music and sketches. This year’s show is set in the 1950s and will feature holiday favorites along with popular songs of that era. Additional information is available at www.fcponline.org/auditions/.

A Freeport Trail Challenge has begun in which participants hike four local through October and win prizes. They can collect stamps from each trail on the Trail Challenge Passport or post a photo selfie from their walk to Freeport Conservation Trust’s Facebook page or on Instagram #freeporttrailchallenge. There will be prizes for kids who get all four stamps in their Passports and adults completing the challenge will be entered into a raffle for prizes.

The four trails in the challenge are Cousins River Trail, Powell Point Trail, Frost Gully Woods Trail and Hedgehog Mountain Trail. Pick up a Freeport Trail Challenge Passport around town and through the co-sponsors the town of Freeport, Casco Bay YMCA and Freeport Conservation Trust. Directions to each trailhead are on the Passport cards or online at www.freeportconservationturst.org. Peace Walk coming

The Maine Veterans for Peace and associated peace organizations will sponsor this year’s Peace Walk, which will make a stop at the First Parish Church Congregational in Freeport on Sunday, Oct. 18. The church will host a potluck supper for walkers and friends at 6 p.m., and the group will make a presentation on the issue of increased militarization of the world’s seas at approximately 7:15 p.m. The presentation will focus on the effects that the military presence has on the life forms that inhabit the oceans.

Those interested in joining the walk on Oct. 18 should meet the other walkers at the Joshua Chamberlain statue on Maine Street, Brunswick (near Bowdoin College) at 9 a.m. The 9-mile leg of the walk will follow Pleasant Street into Freeport.

The Peace Walk, extending from Ellsworth to Portsmouth, N.H., will be led this year by Buddhist monks and nuns from the Nipponzan Myohoji order, which specializes in peace walks around the world.

Each year the Freeport Town Council presents a Citizen of the Year Award to honor those who have contributed substantively to the quality of the town.
