SANFORD — Massabesic quarterback Isaac DesVergnes scored from oneyard out with two minutes remaining on Friday night to put the Mustangs up 21- 20 on Sanford, but the host Spartans found a way to drive the field and score the game- winner with 27 seconds left to pick up a 28- 21 win.

“I’m really proud of the team … we found a way to win,” said Sanford coach Mike Fallon.

Despite Massabesic’s 1- 6 record, Fallon knew the Mustangs, who picked up their first win last week, were going to come ready to play.

“It was a battle from the get- go. Massabesic did a great job and their coaches clearly got them prepared,” said Fallon. “Looking at the film over the last few weeks, we could see them getting better and better. The kids are starting to figure things out and believe in what they are doing. They were very sound, they were very prepared and they gave us everything we could handle tonight. We kind of feel like we survived one.”

Massabesic would take a 7- 0 lead into the second quarter after DesVergnes scored his first of three rushing touchdowns in the opening quarter.

Sanford would rally with two scores in the second quarter – one coming from quarterback Frankie Veino on a two- yard run and the other coming from Keith Kerrigan on a four- yard run, which made it 14- 7 at the half.

Both teams would add touchdowns in the third. DesVergnes scored from seven yards out and sophomore Sam Anderson sprinted in for a 22- yard score, but a missed extra point would put the Sanford lead at 20-14 heading into the fourth.

“A kid like Sammy Anderson, who has played a lot of defense for us, but not a lot of offense, comes up today and makes big plays as a sophomore,” said Fallon.

The Mustangs would then take the lead on the third TD for DesVergnes, but Sanford rallied with a two- minute drill scoring drive, which ended with Anderson scoring on a 21- yard run. A two- point conversion from Veino, would make it a 28- 21 lead for the home squad.

“I’m proud of our kids because our backs were against the wall on several occasions and they found a way to win,” said Fallon. “We had to drive the field with one timeout and our kids found a way.”

The win was big for the players and the Sanford community, said Fallon.

“It’s always a good thing to get a chance to beat Massabesic. They are our rival and the kids take a lot of pride in it, our community takes a lot of pride in it,” said Fallon.
