SACO — The Thornton Academy Golden Trojans and their highpowered offense surged past Bonny Eagle by a score of 45-21 Saturday afternoon.

Although the Trojans’ passing game was kept in check, their rushing attack proved to be too powerful for Bonny Eagle, racking up over 180 yards of rushing. TA senior running back Greg Ruff led the team with 92 yards, while fullback Owen Elliott scored three touchdowns.

“We played real well on offense today. We got the ball to a lot of our key players and we were really able to spread the ball throughout the field,” said TA head coach Kevin Kezal.

The Trojans’ defense also played well for the most part, collecting two interceptions and recovering a fumble.

Perhaps the biggest play of the day came from special teams. Following a 46-yard touchdown run by Bonny Eagle quarterback Zack Brannon, TA’s Ben Lambert returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown, stifling any momentum the Scots were hoping to gain.

“I thought we played good today, we got off to a really good start. Bonny Eagle is a good team and responded, but we responded back. Our kids made a lot of big plays today, especially on special teams, which is important,” said Kezal.

Saturday’s win improves the Trojans to a 7-1 record. Though Kezal is pleased with his team’s season, he still believes there is room for improvement.

“It’s never as good as it seems but it’s never as bad as it seems, there are definitely areas we need to do a better job in,” said Kezal. “We will watch the film this week and make the improvements.”

As the Trojans continue their playoff push, Kezal stressed the importance of playing hard and consistent. Saturday’s win was a good start for the defending state champions.

“That is the way we are going to have to play in the upcoming tournament, we’re going to have to play good all-around football,” said Kezal.

Thornton Academy, which is the top seed in the Class A South field, will receive a bye this week before hosting the winner of Scarbough and Sanford in the regional semifinals.
