William “Liam” Somers, one of five candidates running for two seats on the Scarborough Town Council in Tuesday’s municipal election, admits he provided inaccurate information about his educational background for a candidate profile published Oct. 22 in the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram.
Somers said in an initial interview that he received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Maine. According to the university’s student records office, Somers has no degree from UMaine. He attended the university in Orono for three semesters, from the fall of 1988 through the fall of 1989, as a non-degree undergraduate student who had no declared major.
A UMaine alumna checked on Somers’ degree status and reported the error to the newspaper.
“This is absolutely my fault,” Somers said Monday. “I just glossed over it.”
