A Freeport publisher of school textbooks has nearly doubled its work force to 14 in the past 18 months, has issued more than 20 new titles/editions in the past five years, and is making note of it all with a new website, logo and tag line.
Wayside Publishing, which moved from Yarmouth to the space once occupied by the J.L. Coombs shoe store at 262 U.S. Route 1 in April, also is celebrating its growth with a new classroom interface and a new e-textbook platform. A classroom interface is an online learning platform, and an e-textbook platform is digital textbooks.
Wayside Publishing’s textbooks of world languages are sold mostly in California, Texas, Florida and New York, most of them Spanish. Wayside Publishing also produces books for teachers of French, German, Latin, English and history.
Greg Greuel, Wayside Publishing owner and a Freeport resident, said that the Spanish textbooks sold in the four states work both for the English-speaking student learning Spanish, and for the Spanish-speaking student who needs to hone his or her own language skills.
Greuel said his company is well-positioned to continue its growth.
“Languages are our main area of expertise,” Greuel said. “In a shrinking world, students best compete in a global marketplace by learning new languages. Our employment has increased because of the great products we are making.”
Michelle Sherwood, Wayside’s marketing manager, said that the company’s focus on world languages is a good fit for the trends in education, which emphasize “world-readiness” standards.
“We’re trying to teach students to interact with different perspectives,” Sherwood said. “The goal is to teach students to interact with people who have different perspectives than their own.”
Wayside Publishing’s new tag line is “Learn to Explore,” Sherwood said.
“I want teachers to know that if they’re willing to explore and leave behind traditional language teaching methodologies, we can provide them everything they need,” she said. “No matter how many years you spend learning a new language or teaching a new language, it’s an adventure. What I’m most excited about is that teachers will be able to find what they need easily and evaluate if we have the right program for them and their students.”
