Thornton Academy’s Austin McCrum drops back for a pass during the state championship game.
SACO — There was no doubt that a Thornton Academy football player would be one of the semifinalists for the annual Fitzpatrick Trophy, which honors the state’s best senior football player. The only question was would it be standout quarterback Austin McCrum or standout running back Greg Ruff.

McCrum got the call and is now one of 12 semifinalist for the award, which will be announced on Jan. 24 at a banquet held at the Holiday Inn By The Bay in Portland.

The TA senior QB was a key part of the Trojans’ state championship run.

McCrum finished the state championship game with 137 yards through the air, 78 more on the ground and a key fourth-quarter touchdown run.

The standout finished his senior season with 1,956 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. He also added 358 rushing yards and four scores.

McCrum also clearly met the criteria of being a standout in the classroom and in the community.

The TA senior, who will head to Lafayette College in the fall, has spent his free time volunteering with the Saco Fire Department, the Saco Food Pantry and with Saco Youth Football.

The other 11 finalists are Falmouth’s Connor Aube, Messalonskee’s Jack Beratchez, Leavitt’s Levi Craig, Portland’s Joe Esposito, Scarborough’s Mahlon Glidden, Greely’s Sam Peck, Mt. Blue’s Nate Pratt-Holt, Dirigo’s Riley Robinson, Cony’s Reid Shostak, Oak Hill’s Dalton Therrien and Brunswick’s Will Bessey.
