KENNEBUNK — Two New York men found out that driving fast on the Maine Turnpike can get you stopped for speeding and a keen-nosed police dog might find something else during the stop.

Maine Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said Robert Hines, 28, and Jason Viorla, 30, both of the Bronx, were taken into custody Tuesday after a certified police dog named Maxx allegedly smelled drugs in their car.

After Maxx indicated there were drugs present, Trooper Robert Cejka conducted a search and turned up 152 grams of heroin, valued at about $25,000, hidden in the trunk.

The two men are charged with trafficking in heroin.

They were initially stopped because they were driving 90 mph along the northbound lane of the turnpike in Kennebunk.
