SANFORD — Salvation Army bell ringers will be out in force today to encourage folks to help fill the kettles for Christmas and beyond.

Sanford Salvation Army Capt. Erin Smullen said bell ringers will be at the Sanford Wal-Mart on Main Street in south Sanford from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for Kettle Blitz Day.

Smullen said donations across New England are lagging below expectations and so the Kettle Blitz has been organized to help fill the need. Statewide, the goal for the kettle drive this year is to raise $734,000.

Kettle Blitz Day is intended to draw attention to society’s casualties – individuals and families who are struggling to survive – said Smullen. The Salvation Army assists them by providing food, clothing and toys for youngsters at Christmas.

Income from the red kettles not only helps during the Christmas season but throughout the year; it is a major fundraiser for the Salvation Army.
