SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Officials say plans are underway to dedicate a Springfield park in memory of a city native who was killed when a gunman killed five U.S. servicemen in Chattanooga, Tennessee in July.

The Springfield Republican reports Mayor Domenic Sarno will formally announce the naming of a piece of East Forest Park after Marine Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan on Friday.

The park site is located off South Branch Parkway near Watershops Ponds.

Sarno says naming the park after “our late hometown hero” is appropriate because Sullivan and his brother used to take paddle boats over to the waterway now being named in his honor.
