SANFORD — They help out with rent, heat and electricity, send kids to summer camp, and assist families at Thanksgiving and Christmas – but today, Dec. 23, the Sanford Salvation Army is running about $9,000 short of their red kettle goal.
They’re hoping a late surge in donations will bring in what is needed so the local Salvation Army branch can continue their mission to help others.
Capt. Erin Smullen said as of Tuesday, the red kettle drive has brought in just over $41,000. The goal is about $50,000.
“People have been very generous so far,” she said. “We’re praying and hoping for a Christmas miracle.”
At Thanksgiving, the Salvation Army helped 80 families; they plan to assist 150 families at Christmas.
Red kettle donations and a grant from the United Way are the agency’s major funding sources, said Smullen. Funds form the red kettle drive support the Sanford Salvation Army year around, she said.
Kettles that support the Sanford Salvation Army corps are located at Marden’s, Shaw’s Supermarket and Wal- Mart in Sanford and at Reny’s and IGA in Wells.
