WILTON (AP) — Two senators from Maine want to expand Medicaid in the state to include more low-income residents.
Wilton Republican Sen. Tom Saviello is sponsoring a bill that would bring in about $200 million a year in federal funds to buy health insurance for people earning about $18,000 to $24,000 a year.
The bill is expected to go before the Legislature next month.
Saviello says the legislation would benefit rural areas. He has invited fellow lawmakers to visit health centers this week to learn about the potential impact.
Augusta Republican Sen. Roger Katz says he wants to get a federal waiver to pay for drug treatment.
House Republican leader Ken Fredette says he expects most Republicans will oppose the expansion.
Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s administration says he would reject the bill.
