How Animals Survive, 10 a.m. Jan. 11 in Damariscotta

Homeschooled children age 5 and older can learn how animals survive winter at the Damariscotta River Association. Classes are held the second Monday of each month, and include hiking and journaling. The cost is $5 per class. To register, go to www.damariscottariver.org or call 563-1393.

Nature Writing, Jan. 19 in Augusta

A six-part nature writing workshop will be held at the Viles Arboretum. Instructor Andrea Lani, a certified Maine master naturalist, will teach how to write about the natural world. The cost is $45 for all six classes and a membership to the arboretum. Space is limited. To register, call 621-0031.

Tuckahoe Preserve, 10 a.m. Jan. 23 in Berwick

Great Works Regional Land Trust board member Michael Wright of Berwick will lead a ski or snowshoe trek, weather permitting, as part of the annual tour on Beaver Dam Heath. Meet in the parking area on Hubbard Road, 4.3 miles north of Berwick center. It is located 3.4 miles north of the turn off Rochester Road. Registration is required; the cost is $5.
