James Dyer, missing since Friday

SACO — Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating 23-year-old James “Jim” Dyer of Saco, who has been missing since he was last seen leaving the Pearl Night Club in Portland’s Old Port at 3 a.m. New Year’s Day.

Saco Police Chief Bradley Paul said in a written statement Sunday that the department was “very concerned” about Dyer’s disappearance, as he had not contacted friends or family, used social media or answered his cell phone.

Dyer is described as a Caucasian male, 5 feet 9 inches tall and about 190 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. He has facial hair, and both ears are pierced with wooden gauges.

He was last seen wearing a red flannel shirt, tan khaki pants and L.L. Bean boots, according to police.

The investigation has been taken over by Saco’s Criminal Investigative Division, which will be coordinating efforts with the Portland Police Department, said Paul.

Paul said police have followed up on several leads, none of which have resulted in locating Dyer. Portland police have searched the Portland waterfront area “extensively and repeatedly” without success, and will continue waterfront search efforts, he said.

Dyer’s mother, Amy Dyer of Old Orchard Beach, posted a photo of her son with a notice of his disappearance on Facebook. As of this morning, the post had been shared more than 5,100 times.

“I’m just hoping and praying for the best,” his cousin Dave Dyer, who lives in Seattle, said in an email.

“Jimmy is probably the funniest guy in our family, which is a hard thing to do. He’s always able to crack a laugh out of you or put a smile on your face. I don’t think I ever saw him in a bad mood,” said Dave Dyer. “Our family bonds a lot through sports, and Jimmy was always right there in the mix with the rest of us Dyers.

“We’ve all been proud of him. He’s a great, funny kid. He’s been doing well as an adult.”

Police are asking anyone with information regarding Dyer’s whereabouts to call the Saco Police Department at 284- 4535.
