Brooke Flaherty scored 15 points and the University of New England used a 23-3 run in the third quarter to beat Curry 81-40 in a women’s basketball game Thursday night at Biddeford.

Alicia Brown added 13 points, Olivia Shaw and Lauren Hayden had 11 points, and Alanna Vose finished with 10 for UNE (7-3, 4-0 Commonwealth Coast).

MEN: Ian Mileikis made a 3-pointer with one second left to give visiting St. Joseph’s (4-8, 1-4 GNAC) a 63-62 win over Norwich (3-9, 0-5) at Northfield, Vermont.

Quinn Richardson-Newton had 14 points to lead five St. Joseph’s players in double figures. Mileikis and Craig Luschenat each had 12 points, Darian Berry had 11 and Marc Corey had 10 for the Monks.

 Drew Coveney scored 20 points to lead the University of New England (7-4, 2-2 Commonwealth Coast) to a 76-69 win over Curry (0-12, 0-5) at Biddeford.

HOCKEY

AHL: Rob Schremp was named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team for the AHL All-Star Classic on Feb. 1 in Syracuse, New York.

Schremp, who has 13 goals and 14 assists in 32 games for the Pirates, will also participate in the All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 31.

NHL: Alex Ovechkin scored his 497th goal, Braden Holtby stopped 34 shots to keep up his stellar play and the NHL-leading Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders, 4-1.

Jason Chimera, Nate Schmidt and Nicklas Backstrom also scored as Washington became the first team with 30 wins.

Michael Del Zotto scored his second goal of the game with 37 seconds left in overtime to send Philadelphia to a 4-3 win over the Wild at St. Paul, Minnesota.

Reilly Smith and Vincent Trocheck scored eight seconds apart in the first period and the visiting Florida Panthers extended their franchise-best win streak to 11 games with a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators.

GOLF

EUROPEAN TOUR: Jaco van Zyl shot a 7-under 65 to top a South African-dominated leaderboard in the first round of the SA Open at Gauteng, South Africa, the Tour’s first event of 2016.

Shaun Norris was alone in second place after a 66.

INTERNATIONAL: Saudi Arabia’s soccer federation said its clubs will not play Asian Champions League matches in Iran amid rising diplomatic tension. The decision comes days after individual clubs refused to travel to Iran for safety reasons when the competition kicks off next month.

FIFA: Michel Platini is giving up his bid to become the next FIFA president. Platini, however, remains determined to overturn the eight-year ban he was handed by FIFA’s ethics committee last month.

TENNIS

QATAR OPEN: Top-seeded Novak Djokovic survived a second-set challenge to beat eighth-seeded Leonardo Mayer of Argentina 6-3, 7-5 to reach the semifinals in Doha.

CHENNAI OPEN: In India, local wild card Ramkumar Ramanathan and Italian qualifier Thomas Fabbiano reached their first ATP quarterfinals.

SHENZHEN OPEN: Eugenie Bouchard’s comeback from the concussion she suffered from a locker-room fall at the U.S. Open was stalled by a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Hungary’s Timea Babos in China.

Also, Agnieszka Radwanska advanced to the semifinals by beating Wang Qiang of China.
