Deacon Peter J. Bernier has been named director of ministerial services for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, effective Jan.19. Bishop Robert Deeley recently made the announcement about the new position, which will oversee the office of the permanent diaconate and several functions related to the formation of priests, coordinate the diocese’s international priests and also act as the liaison for various chaplaincy services.
Bernier was ordained to the diaconate in June 2004, and is a deacon at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Windham, where he has served in several capacities since 1986. He has a master’s degree in pastoral theology from Loyola University in New Orleans, a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology from the University of Southern Maine in Portland, and a diploma in electronics and communications from Southern Maine Technical College. He has worked in the engineering field since 1977, at companies in Maine and Massachusetts. Bernier and his wife, Debra, have been married for 38 years and have three children.
