BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) — Police say a young boy is in critical condition after he another child fell through thin ice on a Brockton pond.

The Boston Globe reports the boys, ages 9 and 12, were playing with friends near the unnamed pond Saturday afternoon when they tiptoed onto the ice and fell in.

They were rescued after their friends ran to the street and flagged down motorists for help.

The boys were taken to Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital for an evaluation. The 12-year-old boy was later taken to Boston Hospital, where he was in critical condition Saturday night.

Police say the boys may have been acting on a dare when they walked onto the icy pond.
