Nancy Randall Clark, the first woman to serve as Maine’s Senate Majority Leader, passed away on Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, at the age of 77 surrounded by her beloved birds, squirrels, and other family members at her home on Brigantine Cove in South Freeport. This was her wish. She was born in Portland, ME, on May 6, 1938, to the late Martha Jane (Lund) and Willis Shaw Randall.

She attended Freeport Public Schools, the University of Maine and Husson College, where she received her teaching and business degrees. She earned her master’s degree from Bryant College. She taught school for 40 years, inspiring generations of young students, and even drove a taxi for a few summers to supplement her income. She was a Maine legislator for 20 years serving in the House and the Senate, where she was well respected, and a force to be reckoned with. She was a Democrat and Proud of It!

She was a member of the Harraseeket Grange as Master, the Casco Chapter of Eastern Star as Worthy Matron, The Freeport Elders, D.A.R., a board member of The Freeport Community Services, Freeport Women’s Club, M.S.S.P.A., a lifelong member of the South Freeport Congregational Church, and sponsored many other worthy organizations. She always persevered in improving the human condition, and championing the rights of women.

Survived by her sister, Lois Randall, and spouse, Captain Steven H. Edwards of Falls Church, VA; a nephew, Randall H. and spouse Apryl Edwards of Canton, GA; a nephew, Scott and spouse Jamie Edwards of Cumming, GA; a niece Katherine J. and spouse Matthew Jordan of Durham, ME; a niece Michelle D. Yerdon of Adams, NY, and loving caregiver, Tamantha J. Wilson of Freeport, ME, plus several grand nieces and nephews!

A private service for fellow congregants, close personal friends, and family, will be held Jan. 30, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the South Freeport Congregational Church. The public “Celebration of Life” is on Saturday, June 4 at 4 p.m. at the Harraseeket Grange in Freeport. For additional information, please email: [email protected] or call 678 982 8271.
