OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Old Orchard Beach Lady Gulls scored double digits in just one quarter on Monday afternoon as they dropped a 40-27 decision to visiting Waynflete.

OOB scored just 10 points in the opening half as they struggled to find the bottom of the net. Fortunately for the Lady Gulls, Waynflete also struggled from the field and held just a 13- 10 lead at the break.

“We had some good looks in the first half that didn’t go,” said OOB coach Dean Plante. “In the second half, the first three minutes of the third quarter, we just didn’t value the ball.”

That opening three minutes of the third quarter saw the Lady Gulls turn the ball over several times, which led to easy transition points for the visiting Flyers.

“When you don’t value the basketball, those are four-to-five point swings and that’s what happened. They got their dozen (point) lead and that was it, then we played them even,” said Plante.

Waynflete would outscore the Lady Gulls 15-6 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

The two teams would play an even fourth quarter as Waynflete held just a 12-11 scoring edge in the final period.

OOB was led by Brianna Plante with nine points and Peyton Feitz with six points. Emily Greenlee chipped in with five points and Vanessa Hebert added four.

Annika Brooks led Waynflete with 20 points.

Despite falling to 4-8 with the loss, the Seagulls will be in the Class C South playoffs when February rolls around – it’s just a matter of where they will be seeded.

“We have six games, all winnable, (against) teams that we’ve either beaten before or we played close. My thought is, if we get three or four more (wins), we have a good shot to host (a playoff game). If we don’t take care of business, we will be traveling – we’ll see,” said Plante.
