DURHAM
Maine State Police say the man found dead at a Durham recreational area Tuesday is Alan Kelley, 43, of Durham, but who most recently had been living at a Lewiston homeless shelter.
The body was discovered Tuesday morning at Runaround Pond — which is on a road by the same name — by a man using the portable rest room at the parking lot.
There is no immediate indication of foul play, but the State Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct toxicology tests before concluding the results of the autopsy, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Detectives said a hypodermic needle was found in Kelley’s clothing and they are still trying to determine how and when Kelley arrived at the Runaround Pond recreational area, since he had no car. He also was not dressed for sub-freezing temperatures.
Kelley was estranged from his wife and children police say, who live about five miles away from where his body was found.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
