Clark service Jan. 30

A memorial service for Nancy Randall Clark will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 11 a.m., at South Freeport Church on South Freeport Road, where Clark worshipped her entire life. A reception will immediately follow the service at Freeport Community Center, 53 Depot St. Both the service and the reception are open to all.

Poetry reading

Freeport Community Library will host poet Jennifer Lamson-LaPlume, Monday, Feb. 8, at 6:30 p.m., as she reads from “Anything But Empty,” her first collection of poetry.

Although she began writing poems as a young person, it was after a serious car accident in 2012 that she began writing poetry in earnest. These poems, which reflect her struggle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, ultimately became her first collection of published poetry.

Chocolate Bash

Freeport Community Library will host its 15th annual Chocolate Bash, a popular event including a buffet of bite-size chocolate temptations, on Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Visitors can sample the array of chocolate treats for $2 per plate. There will also be raffles for chocolate desserts, a treat basket and an art basket made up of donations from members of the Art Guild of Freeport, whose annual art exhibit is on display in February at the library. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and can be purchased the evening of the Chocolate Bash, or any time before then at the library’s main desk.The musical group Cul de Sax will provide live music at the event.

Town seeking photos

The town is looking for photographs or artwork of Freeport that can be donated for use in the annual report for the fiscal year 2015, ending on June 30. Photos can be of any scene, event, or activity around town and should be taken from July 1, 2014, through June 30, 2015. Photographs should be digital and high resolution. The works will be used as space permits.

The cover of the 2014 Annual Report features a photograph titled “Winslow Park,” contributed by Abigail Williams, who is an artist and Freeport resident.

Printed copies of the Annual Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014 (and earlier years), are available at the Town Hall and also available online on the town’s website. College honor

Morrisville State College, Morrisville, N.Y., recently announced that Leanna Smith of Freeport was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2015 semester. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must achieve an average of 3.0 to 3.99 for the semester and complete 12 credit hours.

for farm programs

Wolfe’s Neck Farm is now enrolling campers in grades 3-5 for February Vacation Camp, Feb. 16-18. Participants will explore life on the farm in the winter and how animals prepare for, and survive, this time of year.

After barn chores and morning snack time, activities will center on what’s happening at the farm, the weather, and this year’s theme, “Winter on the Farm.” Activities could include lessons in winter barn management, livestock handling, animal tracking, building bluebird boxes and learning about animal hibernation and torpor.

Registration also is now open for all 2016 educational programs at Wolf’s Neck Farm, including spring after-school program and summer day camp.

Lego Derby Day

Kids ages 5-11 are invited to a Lego Derby Day, Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 3:45-4:45 p.m., at the Freeport Community Library. Derby racers will build a car using only Legos from the library collection and then make a test track to see how it runs. When racers are satisfied with their design they can run their car down a giant race track to see how fast and far it can go.

The derby is limited to 30 participants. Those interested should stop by or call the Children’s Room to sign up, at 865-3307. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Four join board at Friends of Casco Bay

The conservation group Friends of Casco Bay elected four area residents to the board for three-year terms.

They are: Jim Dusch of Portland, an attorney who was recently named deputy executive director of the Maine Public Employees Retirement System. He served 20 years with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection; Peter Dufour of Portland, a tax attorney and CPA who last year founded Dufour Tax Group; Pat Ianni of Falmouth, environmental scientist and attorney employed as an environmental risk officer at TD Bank; and Peter LeBourdais of Harpswell, a practicing general dentist, owner and president of Brunswick Dental Health Associates and a longtime board member of the Maine Rowing Association.

at Freeport Players

Freeport Players elected new members Carmela Castro and Penny Davis-Dublin to the board of directors at its annual meeting, Jan. 20.

Castro has been a regular on the Freeport stage since her debut with the Players in 2001 as Meg in “Crimes Of The Heart.” Her most recent appearances with the Freeport Players were in “Love Letters” (February 2015) and “Almost, Maine” (September 2014). Castro served for over 10 years on the board of Sherman Players in Sherman, Conn., was on the inaugural board of Musicals at Richter in Danbury, Conn., and was the bookkeeper and office manager of Fiddlehead Center for the Arts in Gray in its formative years.

Davis-Dublin taught for 35 years at the high school and college levels. She is also on the advisory committee of The Daytime Players, a theater troupe affiliated with Schoolhouse Arts in Standish, whose members are at least 60 years old. She joined Freeport Players in 2015, performing in the casts of “Love & Lobsters” (Melba) and “Exit The Body” (Lillian Seymour).

They join continuing members Sally Grover, Judy Lloyd and Phil Chin; and Nancy Salmon, Betsy Roper, Jane Bradley, and Scott Miller, who were elected to new terms. The 2016 Executive Committee was elected: Scott Miller, president; Phil Chin, vice president; Judy Lloyd, treasurer; and Betsy Roper, secretary.

Chocolate buffet

South Freeport Congregational Church will hold a Valentine’s Extravaganza Chocolate Buffet, Sunday, Jan. 31, from 4-5:30 p.m., at the church, 98 South Freeport Road.

A variety of decadent chocolates will be offered, including raspberry creams, sea salt caramels, pecan turtles, peanut butter cups, cappuccino and mint meltaways and more. Live music will be provided by vocalist and choir director Denis Drobinski, who will be singing a collection of love songs. Chocolatier Tom Wilbur will also make an appearance at the event.

Winter reminders

The Public Works Department reminds residents that for the winter season, they are allowed two, 5-gallon buckets of sand per storm. Sand is located adjacent to the silver recycling bullet on Hunter Road in front of the Public Works facility.

Also, no parking is allowed on public streets nor in turnarounds during winter storm events. Residents should keep streets and turnarounds clear of vehicles (including trailers, campers, etc.) during a storm. The winter parking ban is now in effect, from 11 p.m.-7 a.m., and will continue until April 15.

Free tax prep assistance

AARP will conduct free tax preparation assistance Wednesday mornings beginning in February at the Freeport Community Center. Assistance is for low-to-moderate-income households, with special attention to those 60 years and older. For an appointment, call 865-4743, ext. 100 and leave a message. Calls will be returned by Freeport Community Center volunteers once a week on Thursday mornings.

Dog licenses available

Dogs 6 months and older are required to be licensed by law. Registration is available at the Freeport Town Hall or online at www.doglicensing.com. All dog licenses expire Dec. 31 of each year and must be renewed no later than Jan. 31 of each year. The fee is $6 for a spayed or neutered dog and $11 for unspayed or not neutered dog. After Jan. 31, a late fee of $25 per dog also will be charged.

Special Dunkin’ Donuts coffee mugs are now available to buy. Purchase a mug for $20 and use it for free coffee or tea (hot or cold) every Sunday at any Dunkin’ Donuts in Maine, as well as Coos and Carroll counties in New Hampshire. All proceeds benefit the Freeport High School class of 2016 Project Graduation fund.
