BIDDEFORD POOL — Dr. Gaetano “Guy” Santa Lucia of Biddeford Pool passed away Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

Guy was born Oct. 4, 1938, in Waterbury, Connecticut, the son of Grace Guerrera and Caesar Santa Lucia. Raised and educated in Waterbury, he graduated from Sacred Heart High School.

In September 1962, he entered St. Francis College in Biddeford, receiving a Bachelors of Arts degree in English. It was at St. Francis where Guy made many close friendships that continued throughout his lifetime. After receiving a Ph.D. in English literature from Case Western Reserve University, he returned to St. Francis as a full-time faculty member.

He dedicated much of his time when he was not teaching to his many talents and interests, including opera. Guy taught introduction to opera for the popular Elderhostel program during summers at St. Francis College. Senior students would come year after year from several parts of the country to attend.

His love for literature, music and theater led him to become a critic for the Portland Press Herald and the Biddeford Journal Tribune. He maintained a strong interest in politics and sports, and was a member of the Biddeford Pool Community Club, where he cooked Italian dinners for the local community.

Guy began teaching advance placement English courses at Deering High School in the early ‘80s, where he was a successful and well-respected teacher. He often arrived early and played loud opera music in his classroom, which attracted many students to whom he introduced classical music.

Throughout his entire life and career, Guy was well loved and appreciated for the positive influences he had on generations of students with whom he was still in touch.

He was preceded by: his parents and his brother, Michael.

Guy is survived by: his sisters; Anita Santa Lucia of Waterbury, Connecticut, and Angela and brother-inlaw Kaj Gartz of Milford, Connecticut; a sister-in-law, Carol Santa Lucia of Palm Beach, Florida; nieces and nephews, Kaj-Michael and Tricia Gartz of Northbrook, Illinois, Erik and Katherine Gartz of Arlington, Virginia, Melissa and Thomas Wade of Eastern, Connecticut, and Parker Santa Lucia of New York.
