Meetings

The Planning Board has scheduled a public hearing for Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 6 p.m., at the Town Hall, on proposed land-use ordinance changes. A meeting will follow the hearing. The ordinance proposal is available at the town office.

The Durham Board of Selectmen will meet Tuesday, Feb. 9 and Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 6:30 p.m., at the Town Hall.

Valentine’s flowers on sale

Durham Community School eighth-grade students are selling Valentine’s carnations for their next fundraiser. Order forms went home for students in grades K-8. Flowers are $3 each. Those who would like to purchase a flower or two should fill out the order form, enclose the payment and send it in by Wednesday, Feb. 3. The flowers will be delivered to the children on Friday, Feb. 12.

Snow tubing trip Feb. 4

The Outing Club at Durham Community School is having a snow-tubing event at Seacoast Fun Park in Windham, Thursday, Feb. 4. Students will leave school at 3:15 p.m. and return at 8 p.m. The activity fee is $8. Children should dress for the weather, with snow pants, boots, hat, mittens, etc. They also should bring extra money to purchase food at Burger King or bring a snack to eat at the tubing park. Permission slips and money should be returned to school before Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Community Lunch coming Feb. 16

Community Lunch at the First Congregational Church of Durham, 773 Royalsborough Road, will be served Tuesday, Feb. 16. Doors open at 11:30 and the meal is served at noon. The suggested donation for lunch is $2-$4, and all proceeds fund future lunches. The general schedule is the first and third Tuesday of the month. The next dates are March 1 and 15.

The church, located at the intersection of routes 9 and 136, is handicapped accessible. Those interested in helping or who have questions can call Julie Wagoner at 353-9715.

Applicants sought for Durham scholarship

The Durham Scholarship Committee will award one $1,000 scholarship this year. Scholarship applications and qualifications are available at the Durham Town Office or online at www.durhamme.com and must be completed and returned to the Town Office no later than March 11, at 4:30 p.m. The scholarship will be paid directly to the recipient after the successful completion of the first semester (minimum 2.5 GPA). The recipient, who must live in Durham, is limited to one scholarship award. The recipient must have applied and/or been accepted as an incoming freshman in an accredited academic, vocational, professional or technical school, college or university and must attend classes full time.

Applications will be reviewed and finalists chosen by the Durham Scholarship Committee. The scholarship award will be presented at the Durham town meeting on Saturday, April 2. All scholarship applicants will be notified by mail of the committee’s decision by mail prior to April 2.

Feb. 16 deadline for nomination papers

Nomination papers for open seats on town boards must be completed and filed with the Town Office on or before Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 4:30 p.m. Municipal elections are Friday, April 1. Nomination papers are available at the Town Office to fill the following seats: Two, three-year terms for the Board of Selectmen; three, three-year terms for the Budget Committee; and one, three-year term on the Regional School Unit 5 board.

To be placed on the ballot, any resident of Durham can pick up the form and gather at least 25 and no more than 100 Durham residents’ signatures.

Absentee ballots will be available Tuesday, March 1. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is Monday, March 28.

Snowmobile club meeting monthly

Tri-Town Penguins Snowmobile Club meets the last Tuesday of the month through April, at 7 p.m., at the Durham Fire Station, 615 Hallowell Road in Durham. The next meeting is Feb. 23 New members are always welcome. For more information, contact Duncan Daly at 865-6188 or Mike Yates at 865-3555.

AMVETS membership

Weekly cribbage

The Durham Eureka Community Center, corner of Route 9 and Route 136, hosts cribbage every Tuesday from 9 a.m.-noon.

Rent Eureka Center

The Durham Eureka Community Center is available for rent. The maximum amount of people the hall holds for an event is 50. Contact Nancy Decker at 751-1323 or the Town Office at 353-2561.

Food pantry

The Lisbon Area Christian Outreach (LACO) food pantry, which serves the towns of Durham, Bowdoin, and Lisbon Falls, is open Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m.-noon and Saturday from 8-10 a.m. The LACO Food Pantry is located at the Marion T. Morse School on School Street, Lisbon Falls. The parking lot is behind the Lisbon United Methodist Church, off Berry Avenue. There is also a free clothing bank.
