Longtime Alfred selectman John Sylvester has resigned, effective immediately.
Sylvester tendered his resignation from the three-person board to selectman Chairman Glenn Dochtermann in a letter this morning. Dochtermann and the third selectman, George Donovan, accepted his resignation in an emergency meeting shortly after 10 a.m..
No specific reasons were given for the resignation during the brief meeting, but Dochtermann said he had spoken to Sylvester Tuesday evening, and Sylvester had spoken of conflict and opposition he had encountered on the board.
Sylvester has been a selectman in Alfred for many years, and has been a longtime chairman of the York County Budget Committee as well as chair of the 12 Town Group of municipalities west of the Maine Turnpike.
Selectmen agreed to offer nomination papers for the two years remaining on Sylvester’s term on Feb. 29, and voters will choose a replacement in Alfred’s annual election on March 25.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
