The Maine Principals Association Nordic and Alpine high school State ski championships are under way this week.
In Nordic Class A action at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington, Brunswick’s Lena Martin picked up the individual win in the classical ski in a time of 16:45.3. Martin was more than 24 seconds ahead of Deering’s Leinani Farnsworth, who crossed the finish line in 17:09.5.
Morse skier Jennifer Wilbraham had a solid showing as well, finishing in sixth place in a time of 17:59.9.
Also for Brunswick, Sarah Ferdinand finished in 24thplace, completing the course in 20:09.1, while Dragons teammates Zoe Battle (40th, 22:14.6) and Erin Coughlin (43rd, 22:36.1) skied.
Mt. Ararat’s Eleanor Skinner was the lone Eagle racing, crossing the line in 39th with a time of 22:04.3.
Over in Class B, Freeport’s Lily Johnston finished second to Gray-New Gloucester’s Kaelyn Woods. Johnston completed the course in 15:48.8, with Woods breezing through in 15:23.3.
Other Falcons competing on Thursday were Allison Greuel (17th, 19:20.9), Lily Horne (19th, 19:28), Chloe Davidson (27th, 21:12.3), Lucy Wing (30th, 21:36.3) and Maya Egan (32nd, 21:40.8).
In the boys Class A classical, Tucker Barber of Mt. Blue was the top finisher in 13:46.9.
Mt. Ararat’s Sam Stride (45th, 22:10.9) and Cyrus Warren (49th, 23:21.9) completed the grueling course.
Meanwhile, the Freeport boys dominated the Class B competition. Yacob Olins (14:07.4), Bennett Hight (14:29.3) and Kyle Dorsey (14:39.8) picked up spots 3-5, respectively, with teammate John Smail taking 10th (15:19.9).
Freeport’s total of 22 points leads second-place Caribou by 11 points, with the free skate slated for today.
Other Falcons finishing on Thursday were Nathan Smail (16th, 15:44) and Perrin Davidson (21st, 16:23.7).
In Alpine, Brooke Lever of Edward Little won the slalom in 1:16.84, while Red Eddie Maxx Bell took the top spot for the boys in 1:06.41.
Freeport finished eighth in the Class A boys with 347 total points. Edward Little won the Alpine title with 116 points, followed by Mt. Blue (120) and Cape Elizabeth (138).
In the girls slalom, Brunswick’s Alexandra Wagner was 20th in 1:39.24. Freeport’s Kaia Williams (37th, 1:53.86) and Anna Sawicki (70th, 2:34.51) also competed.
For the boys, Aaron Rusiecki (33rd, 1:33.34), Isaac Salisbury (40th, 1:38.99),. Liam Grogan (43rd, 1:40.92), Eero Pandora (64th, 2:01.14) and Paul Biberstein (71st. 2:11.31) were in action.
Hockey
The Brunswick boys have locked up the No. 3 seed in Class B South and will host No. 6 Cape Elizabeth in a quarterfinal on Tuesday at 8 p.m. inside Sidney J. Watson Arena.
The 9-8-1 Dragons faced the Capers (7-9-2) twice this season, playing to a 2-2 deadlock in the first encounter before falling at home, 4-1, on Jan. 9.
Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse, which plays out of Class A North, missed out on the postseason despite a solid 11-6-1 mark.
In Class A South, the team of South Portland/Freeport/ Waynflete is the No. 7 seed after a 5-11-2 regular season.
The Red Riots draw No. 2 Falmouth (14-4) in the quarters.
